A China Cabinet That Doubles as a Safe

A burglar breaking into a home might not expect to find money and jewels locked inside the piece of furniture that holds the china cabinet. But if it is an EAN buffet, it doubles as a safe, with two compartments that can be secured with an electronic lock.

“It’s a piece that can go into every room,” said Chi Wing Lo, 55, the architect who designed it. (He said he chose the name, a Greek preposition that means “if” or “whether,” to convey that sense of versatility.) “In the bedroom, you can lock away your jewelry,” he added. “In the dining room, you can put dishes and glasses” in it. The 86 5/8 -inch-long buffet is walnut, with sycamore drawer fronts. It is $16,635 with an electronic lock, and $15,026 without.
